Ben and Jerry’s Strawberry Cheesecake Ice Cream has been my favorite ice cream of all time ever since I discovered its richness in college a few years ago. When I moved to New York City it was harder to come by. And now that I live in Brooklyn, it basically feels impossible to find. This makes me sad. I used to get my pints from a co-worker who lived in Queens. It felt like a drug deal.
“Can you get me the stuff?”
On a recent trip to my local grocery store, however, I saw I shiny beacon of light: Ben and Jerry’s Greek Yogurt Strawberry Shortcake Ice Cream. It’s not exactly what I crave on a almost monthly basis, but it was worth a shot. And what’s even better, not just that ice cream was available! Breyer’s Strawberry Cheesecake too! There was only one thing to do.
The winner, obviously, is Ben & Jerry’s original Strawberry Cheesecake.
The reasons for this are twofold,
1) Its swirls of graham cracker crust complement the creamy, strawberry cheesecake ice cream and the strawberry chunks.
2) The salt and sweet mixture is so slight, so that while I can tell it is there, it does not bother me, but in fact makes enhances the two flavors to make the overall experience savory. Salt and sweet tastes are always too much of both and I dislike them because of this, i.e. the chocolate covered pretzel. But this combination is just perfect, the texture is smooth, but the graham cracker makes it rough and it’s amazing.
Failures at life:
I’m not even going to pretend that these are anywhere near as good, but here’s what I have to say.
Ben & Jerry’s Greek Yogurt Strawberry Shortcake: Has chunks of shortbread mixed with strawberry Greek yogurt and strawberry chunks. I am not a fan of Greek yogurt to begin with and the yogurt does not feel creamy enough, a bit tart. Plus frozen strawberries are not sweet or worth eating (except in smoothie situations).
Breyers Blast! Sara Lee Strawberry Cheesecake: I had to buy a whole half-gallon of this!? Chunks of cheesecake in strawberry and vanilla swirl ice cream. Where is the graham cracker crust? I feel so betrayed. I’ve learned that what makes these so unappealing is the chunks of “cheesecake” or equivalent. They are not giving me the satisfaction that the cheesecake ice cream does. I will say that the strawberry swirl was very sweet and delicious, but I was avoiding the chunks of cheesecake and could not appreciate it.
Any other strawberry/cheesecake/shortcake ice creams that I should try? Leave a comment and let me know!
